Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) has an important role to play in preparing students for the choices, changes and transitions which young people will encounter as they become adult in our society.
Through CEG young people can explore and understand the adult world of work, consider their own values and attitudes and learn strategies to cope with the changing demands so that they achieve their full potential. The 1997 Education Act places a duty on colleges to give students in Years 9-11 access to careers education, information and guidance.
Callington Community College endeavours to follow guidance in The National Framework for CEG 11-19 in England, the National Curriculum programmes for study for Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship, and the QCA guidance on Work Related Learning for All at Key Stage 4.
The need for CEG continues to grow and the way in which it is delivered also needs to evolve, in particular, in light of the development of the 14-19 curriculum.
Callington Community College is committed to providing a planned programme of careers education, information and guidance for all students in Years 7-13 in partnership with Connexions Cornwall & Devon.
All students are entitled to receive impartial information, advice and guidance to help them make appropriate pathway and career choices as they progress through their school life.
The School Careers Co-ordinator, Mrs Oakes, is based in the SSC and can offer support and advice to students making subject choices and can also assist with information on long term career aims.
Mrs Oakes is also responsible for arranging careers- focused events such as talks from employers, CV writing workshops, assemblies on Making Choices and apprenticeship information sessions.
There is a Careers Library in the SSC which students are welcome to browse for further information on careers and the world of work. College and training provider prospectuses are also kept here.
There is also a separate Careers Library for Years 12-14 located in the Sixth Form Common Room.
In addition there are two Connexions Advisers who work in the college. In addition to careers advice the Connexions advisers can also offer personal support to those students who are experiencing any forms of barriers to progression such as housing, relationship or money worries.
Helen Pryor can offer advice and support to Years 8 -11 (Mrs Oakes covers Year 7). She is in school all day on Thursdays and Fridays.
Mary Jones supports the Sixth Form. She is in school all day on Wednesdays.
The Connexions advisers are based in Mr Baker's office, opposite the staffroom.
