In January 2005 we heard that the bid had been successful and our official Launch day with Julian Lloyd Webber took place on Tuesday 15th March. It was a day of exuberant music making with workshops in African and Samba Drumming, Taiko, Cornish Bagpipes and singing followed by an afternoon cello masterclass using young cellists from across the region.
With the additional Music Status funds a number of projects were held throughout the year. A major jazz project which involved seven of our Partner Primary Schools working together with The Mike Garrick Jazz Trio. International Singing guru Lynn Marsh gave a day's workshop to develop singing skills. The Annual Callington Youth Music Festival was held at the college in November with nearly 100 participants, Callington students took part in an strings project with The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at Dartington College of Arts, a Flute Workshops day with ‘Flutes 4 All' happened in October, and Counsellor from Ghana delivered djembe drums from Africa and gave a day of workshops to our students.
The music department offered workshops to our partner primary schools in electric lead and bass guitars, HyperScore music technology, Mike Garrick project workshops, and Taiko Drumming.
The project with Kagamusha Taiko of Exeter went from strength to strength and the college now has some twenty-five regular Taiko Drummers who rehearse weekly and perform regularly throughout the year.
Our aim is to look after the musical interests of all of the students in our college by providing high quality teaching both within the curriculum and through instrumental tuition across a wide range of styles and interests. We are also seeking to work closely with our partner primary schools to
provide expertise where needed and to facilitate a seamless change across the KS2 / KS3 divide.
Callington Community College is at the forefront of developments in music education and works closely with LA Music Advisor and the national music associations. We are aiming to become a centre of excellence for music education in the East Cornwall area.
